Weekend Challenges

Jacklin:

Well I have been doing well so far this week with exercise and eating well but the weekends are always my downfall! I went to Gold's on Monday and Tuesday this week and then did Crossfit Tuesday and Thursday and I will be going again on Saturday morning. Crossfit workouts always kick my butt! But the results are awesome and I always feel like I have more energy when I do them. It is great to have a partner to work out with and I'm lucky that my husband works out with me. It definitely motivates me to work out more when I have him to go with, especially those early morning ones when I just don't want to get out of bed! As I said weekends are always my downfall and this weekend is going to be a challenge for me because I have a party to go to and I'm going on a wine tour. I am excited about the wine tour, I love my wine! But I will need to be mindful of how much I am eating...and drinking! I hope everyone has a great weekend and is feeling good about their progress :)

A New Mindset

Tonia:

OMG this program has put me in a whole new mindset toward caring about myself and making better choices for me and my family.Went to the gym this morning for a 5:45am group active class. I considered this early class because it's Friday and I wanted to get my workout done sooner, looking forward to the weekend but as the day progresses I can't wait to leave work to go and walk a couple of miles at the park.Who would have ever thought I would be looking forward to a Friday evening of exercise.WOW

Figuring it All Out

Laura:

It took me awhile I guess to figure out what I was truly doing but, on day 1 I did OK with my diet but was unable to make it to the gym. Day 2 I met with my trainer and she was wonderful and made me feel quite a bit better, although I still felt very overwhelmed, a bit lost and confused with the entire program. Somewhat unsure of truly what I was doing but yet determined to succeed! Day 3, again unable to make it to the gym so was very angry with myself thinking I was never going to be able to do this. Then I realized I was doing it, my diet has improved in just a few short days and I was determined to somehow fit the gym into my busy work schedule and family life. On day 4 I made it to the gym before work and was able to do a great cardio workout. I felt great when I went to work. I felt much better today although had every intention of contacting the nutritionist today as my diet is truly not what it should be and is actually getting quite boring although I am staying within my calories. Then it hit me that my goal is to quit smoking and to do that I did send out my prescription to get my chantix filled, I set my quit date (hopefully) my pills will be here...lol! I am not going to share my quit date yet but it is sooner that I had originally planned! I also plan on contacting the smoking cessation program at St Joe's tomorrow which I again originally was going to hold off on but I need to get moving. I think I am heading in the right direction but just need to utilize all of my resources and find a buddy to work out with as it is truly hard by yourself!! Tomorrow morning I am going to "attempt" (haha) a class at the gym...wish me luck!

What Does Not Kill You Only Makes You Stronger

Tecora:

Finished doing the group kick. The trainer says that class burns 800 calories in hour. I believe it. I couldn't hardly breath right the entire time. What does not kill you only makes you stronger. I got through it. :) Now on the treadmill for a half!

Beth:

Day three and still doing great! I enjoyed an hour-long Zumba class today noon. It was specifically geared towards active adults (seniors) and beginners. I'm a beginner - that's for sure! It was a great workout!

I am hoping to connect with the program's nutritionist soon as I am struggling with some dietary issues. What kind of salad dressing is best? How can I increase protein and still watch sodium intake and foods high in cholesterol ? I ate what I thought was a very balanced diet today. I succeeded in keeping my calories down, but my carbs were high. I've cut out all white starches which was recommended by the cardiologist but even foods like yogurt and Special K cereal are keeping me from decreasing carbs overall. It's frustrating but I remind myself that I'm still only in week one - lots of time to learn and adjust!

This weekend will be a struggle as we are out of town and eating out a lot...I'm committed to making good choices though. Wish me luck :)

Household Exercise and Taking a Break

Roseann:

Today (Wednesday) was a great day. I worked outside in the yard all day from 9 am to 4 pm. Got my cardio exercise by pushing my reel mower for 2 1/2 hours. Was sweating and felt my heart beating fast, so I know that I had a good cardio workout. Then I did weed trimming and hand weeding. Holding the weed eater helped to work my arms. Need a good leg workout? Hand weeding is a good way to work out your thighs. Don’t kneel or use something to sit on, do squats, it really helps to build your thighs! Took breaks to hydrate and eat lunch to make sure I was keeping my body healthy. My hunger was much better, and not so intense. Happy to know that my body is adjusting well.

Tomorrow (Thursday) I will not be doing any exercise. I was bit by a deer fly above my right eye this afternoon, and I reacted badly to it, as the right side of my face is very swollen. Antihistamine makes me very lethargic, so I will not be doing much of anything. It’s ok though, we all need to take a break from exercise. The key is that I have to keep my calories low, as I will not be moving much.

Friday I will be going back to work with my personal trainer. Excited about a new program Gold’s is launching.

Wishing you all Healthy Blessings,
Roseann

Powering Through "Murphy's Law"

Anna:

Yesterday was my "Murphy's law" day meaning that "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong". I had good intentions of getting up and going to spin class with my daughter and lifting weights but one thing after another prevented that from happening. It was discouraging but I need to remind myself that this will happen from time to time and not to beat myself up about it. So since I didn't work out what did I do?

I cooked chicken! Yes, you can feel free to laugh but I cooked chicken, cut it up and measured it with a food scale and then put it into containers. Why go thru all this you may ask? For me it helps me with my portion control so I know that each container is one serving and that I can know how much I am eating and help me stay on track. I also did the same thing with snacks. It is just one more step to help me reach my goal and stay on track. I now need to put some of these healthy snack options in my car so when I am doing the mom route-bank, dry cleaners, gas station, car wash, grocery store, ...I will have something healthy to eat.

I am thankful for being in the program for pushing me to stay on track. I am also thankful for the new friendships and all the encouragement from friends, neighbors and fellow Better U participants! You are keeping me going!

The Journey is Going Great

Suzanne:

Well I'm working today, then off to the gym for a little cardio, then meeting up with my trainer. I just keep telling myself its all worth the pain! Hopefully I will run into some of the other ladies while I'm there. The journey is going great so far. I think the hardest part is figuring what to eat all day, but I'm getting it. I'm going to a party this weekend I'm sure that will be a challenge! I guess if I make a salad to pass and bring my own turkey hotdog I should be fine! Good luck to all my fellow participants!

Recapping Day 3

Sonal:

Wednesday I tried the group centergy at Golds Gym. Boy was it intense. I worked muscles I did not know existed. It was a great workout that produced a lot of sweat. Calorie counting is coming along. Still have to try harder to stay away from sweets. That's going to be a challenge. But I could do it.

Tecora:

A very active day. 30 mins on the elliptical, then a very challenging circuit training class. 3 of us ladies from Better U participated. Once again that always helps to get through it :) Kick boxing Thursday at 5:30 for anyone who is interested. Hope to see you there.

Tonia:

Never thought of 1 minute being a long time, but when your doing 1 minute intervals on an exercise machine for the first time it feels like a lifetime.Worked out with the trainer Sonya at the gym yesterday it was great!

How Technology Can Help You Get Healthy

Beth:

I want to use my blog today to talk about a fabulous mobile app we are using called My Fitness Pal. It's totally free and is fabulous! My comrades on this journey - the other ten women participating in in the BetterU program - are all using this app to not only track our daily diets, but also our daily exercise program. It's a godsend! We are able to share our progress and talk about our goals, successes, questions and support.

Research shows that exercising and dieting with a friend and moral support is more effective. That is crystal clear even after a few days. Knowing that I am meeting one of my fellow challengers at the gym gives me the extra 'nudge' I need to get there!

So far - so good! I am enjoying this journey and am very thankful for the awesome technology available to us and we strive for a healthy lifestyle :)

Meet Barb Muller

Meet Barb Muller:

Nam gave me a tour of the gym, along with Glorius Wallace, the 11th participant in the BetterU Program. I am streamlining my diet and feeling a little lighter already. Since the photo appeared in the POST STANDARD "CNY" section, at least 10 friends have contacted me to offer their congratulations, along with a promise of their support. They are excited for me and wish to be kept informed of my progress. I shall do so. Thank you for this opportunity.

Getting Through Another Day

Suzanne:

Well I made another day! After going to the gym yesterday and joining in on the Fit-traxx class I am feeling it today! Every muscle in my body aches! I guess that's a good thing though cause that's what that class is for. Looks like I'll be doing demo week, I hope some of the other ladies join too! I have to admit chocolate is a challenge for me and I haven't had any since our challenge has started nor do I plan on having any! Every day is a challenge and we need to just keep forging ahead!

Remembering Dad

Tecora:
I am dedicating my workout today to my dad, on the anniversary of his death. He passed away suddenly of a massive heart attack. I will be honoring him as well by doing well on this journey.

Inspiration, Challenges, and Working Out

Roseann:
Well, I made it through another day. When I was doing the elliptical, I saw another of our participants, Beth, training on the circuit with Sonya. It was nice to spend a little bit of time talking with her, and hearing how she is doing. Anna and I went to sculpt class together. Exercising with someone else, really truly helps you. Knowing someone else was there, encouraged me to tough it out, even when I thought I couldn’t hold my leg up one more second, I did, because I had a friend with me, encouraging and inspiring me. Thanks Anna!

I did really well with my exercising, did 30 minutes on the elliptical, 30 min on the recumbent bike, then 60 minutes in the sculpt class. Feeling the effects now of so much intensive work, but grateful to be sore! I won’t be going to the gym tomorrow, will be at home doing hours of yard work. So grateful to have a real mower, I will be doing cardio just going around and up and down the hills pushing it. Also will be weed eating. Get a lot of arm work with that. Even though I will be doing yard work, my muscles will get a small break from the intensive gym work, which is important. Exercising is great, but I have learned that it is important to allow your muscles to rest, so that they can recuperate and rebuild.

The one challenge I have been dealing with since yesterday is my diet. I have cut back considerably on my eating now that I am journaling what I eat. I have to stay within a certain calorie range, and it is tough. But so far, so good. I am trying very hard to intake less calories than I burn, so that I can lose weight. It has been tough these past 36 hours, because hunger has been an issue. Trying to find snacks and foods that are high in calories, but low in fat and carbs is not easy. Looking forward to working with the dietician, so that I can manage this better, and find foods that will help fill me up without loading up on fat and carbs. I realize that I have eaten way too much for years. Our society has a skewed concept of portion and serving size. This is going to be a difficult learning process. My mind seems to understand, but my poor tummy doesn’t. Even after a wonderful dinner, I still feel hungry. I know that this will eventually change, and my stomach will adjust, once my body understands that this is a permanent change from all these years of overeating.

So grateful for my support system, without them, this would be so much more difficult. Thanks ladies!

Remember, more fruits and vegetables, less carbs and fats. Keep up the good work!

Healthy Blessings,
Roseann

Tonia:
Today was a very busy day for me at work, but it didn't stop me from keeping up a journal of everything I consumed. I think I did pretty good. No workout at the gym today, but I did enjoy a brisk 2 mile walk around Onondaga Park with my daughter and best friend.

Support From Friends and Family

Meet Suzanne Viola:

First of all, I want to thank the American Heart Association for giving me a chance of a life time to get healthy! Well, it's day 2 and I meet with my trainer today! I have to say I think I'm going to like this! I started a food journal today and I think that's really go to help! I'm off to the gym again tomorrow with a couple of the other ladies even if it hurts! I want to thank my family and friend for supporting me through this challenge it really means a lot! So come on ladies let's keep our heads up and keep on going! Together we will all be healthier!

Living Up to the Attention

Sonal:

Being in the paper was a bit of a surprise. I didn't realize how many people still read the paper. It was difficult to walk the halls of the hosiptal, because I was approached by a lot of individuals, from staff, to the visitors. All had great encouraging words and were rooting for us, but I am just not used to all this attention. I do feel like the pressure is on, because I don't want to disappoint.

However, I do have to say that I have not yet had a piece of chocolate. On a normal day, I would have already eaten two pieces.

**Here is a link to the article Sonal is referring to: http://blog.syracuse.com/cny/2012/06/11_local_women_take_the_go_red_betteru_challenge_in_a_very_public_way.html

Sticking With It

Anna:

Today when I woke up I was sore and I wanted to just stay in bed. Then I realized I had agreed to meet a friend at the gym so I needed to get moving. I was thankful for this new friend holding me accountable to my weight loss and exercise needs because without her I would have stayed in my bed. I went to the gym and did the elliptical for 30 minutes and then went to a group sculpt class. Off to a good start. Trying to watch what I eat and manage portion control. Each little step is helping me get healthier.

Tecora:

I had a wonderful workout yesterday. Sonal and I were in the same class. Definitely made it more fun and motivational. Today I had lean chicken and salad for my brunch. Still finding it hard to get up and have breakfast before work. But as promised to myself I prepared salad and chicken last night and ate it a work as soon as I was able to. Today is a long day for me at work. So no gym time today. But, I will do Zumba fit with my daughters before having to return to work this evening. I hope everyone is doing well and hanging in there.

The First Day of the Rest of My Life

Meet Beth Savicki:

OK, this is it! This morning is my first meeting with Sonja - my personal trainer - at Gold's Gym. I am super nervous! This is my opportunity to make a major lifestyle change - one that will benefit everyone I love including ME. I want to live to see my great-grandkids but the path I am on is not headed in that direction. My Mom is such a positive person in my life and I want to be that for my daughter for many, many, many years!

I'm 37 years old and married to my college sweetheart. We've been very happily married for 12 years and he's my everything. Every single day, he tells me that I'm the most beautiful woman in the world. That's wonderful, but not exactly a driving force to encourage me to get healthy!

He's 150% supportive of my choice to get involved with Better U and will be participating as well. Sure, it's a program for women but heart-healthy is heart-healthy, right?!

Wish me luck as I take on this lifestyle change. Today is the first day of the rest of my life. Cliche, I know, but appropriate none-the-less!

Looking Back on Day 1

Three participants share stories from their first day of the BetterU Challenge.

Sonal:
Day one is almost coming to an end. I met with Nam this afternoon and had my first workout. It really kicked my butt. Thankfully I had Tacora to do it with me so didn't feel alone. I have also started keeping track on what I am eating. My goal for caloric intake is to be no more than 1200/day. I honestly don't know how I can do that. But I guess I will find out. I did throw out all the "junk" (cookies, candy, etc) from my pantry yesterday. First step in the right direction.

Roseann:
Choices & Yoga is not for wimps!
Wow, what a day! First thing this morning, I met with my personal trainer Sonya. I did “the circuit” 3 times. It is a series of 8 machines that work both your upper and lower body. I also got to jog around their small indoor track twice. Hadn’t “jogged” in years! But I did it! Couldn’t believe how hard it was at times, but appreciated having Sonya there, making sure I was doing everything correctly, and encouraging me to continue, even when it was getting tough.

Because I live quite a ways away from the gym, I have decided to focus two or three types of exercise on the days I go to Gold’s. Not so sure if that is going to be such a good idea, as I was quite sore today. Did spinning class with Anna and her daughter (it was awesome to work out with someone), and centergy (yoga) class after doing the circuit. My knees were yelling at me by the time I was done, but felt great that I had accomplished so much. Spinning is fun, but very hard work! And let me tell you, Yoga is not for wimps! It takes a lot of strength and balance to do those moves! Felt like a whale out of the water, but the instructor was so sweet, and encouraged me to return, as I will improve with practice. Practice makes, well... not perfect.. but more balanced.

I felt so good about my eating choices today. Before this program, I would have taken the canned chicken breast that I opened and mixed it with mayonnaise and slapped in between two slices of white bread. Not today, I sprinkled it on my salad instead.

Instead of ranch dressing, I chose Italian. These may seem like little insignificant choices, but they make a huge difference!

I also increased my water intake.
Not bad for my first day.

Hoping that I can maintain this momentum. I will be going back tomorrow to do the sculpting class with Anna. It’s wonderful having a partner to cheer you on, and encourage you! And you feel more motivated when you encourage another.

Hope as you are reading this, you are thinking about what you need to change today. Even if it is just a matter of changing 1 thing, you have made a positive start to your new heart healthy life!

Healthy Blessings,
Roseann

Jacklin Anderson:

My first day of Better U is almost over and went great! I woke up very motivated to make some positive health changes in my life. It has been wonderful emailing with all of the other participants because it helps encourage me to eat well and work out. I went to the gym after work today and ran/walked on the  treadmill then I met with Deb, the personal trainer at Gold's Gym for our initial session. I added some of my fellow participants on the my fitness pal app on my iPhone and I think that will be helpful as it holds me more accountable to actually log what I am eating and how much I am working out daily. I usually tend to only do it for a couple of days then stop for a week and maybe log for a day and so on... Staying motivated is always my biggest challenge so that is what I am really trying to work on!

Getting Started: Tecora Pertilla

Small goals can make a difference, from food choices to setting aside time for the gym. Meet Tecora Pertilla:

I woke up very excited to begin on my journey to a better me this morning. I am having a debate with my food choices this morning. So, what I have promised to myself is to prepare my healthy food choices for my morning breakfast at night. I am scheduled to be at the gym at 4:30 p.m today. My goal is to be there and working out no later than 3:30 p.m today. I am striving to exercise longer everyday.

4:15pm update:
On the treadmill warming up for the group exercise class. A fellow BetterU participant is also here to do the exercise class. Very excited and motivated

Getting Started: Tonia Moore

Day 1 means the first workout for some of our BetterU challengers. Meet Tonia Moore:

I woke up today really nervous and excited to begin this 12 week journey. I’m going to the gym today for my first workout.  So much information is running through my mind in hopes of success.

Getting Started: Anna Jorgensen

Another challenger is already making progress. Meet Anna Jorgensen:
Day 1

First decision you need to make is that you want a better you! For me I want to lower my cholesterol and my BMI so I can be healthier.

Sounds good but what am I doing to get there?? Well, I started using the myfitnesspal program to log all of my food. This has really helped me stay on track for calories, and monitor my sodium and cholesterol. I recently discover that 2400 grams of sodium was too much and need to stay below 1500 to lose weight. I know it may sound hard to use but the program is very easy and friendly. Trust me, because I am technically challenged. Seriously, if I wasn’t blessed with a teenage daughter I wouldn’t be able to do much. So if I can do it everyone can do it! Monitoring calories isn’t enough to be healthy and instead of doing the math in your head this app does it for you. Well that sounds like an advertisement, sorry guys this is my first blog!

Today I am going to the gym to do 30 minutes on the elliptical and then 30 minutes of weight lifting. Trust me this is a challenge for me as I am NOT someone who loves to exercise and I love to eat. It helps though to have someone to go to the gym with. I always go with my daughter Erin, or my neighbor Sue. Having someone to talk with makes it more fun and the time passes quickly. When you first start going to the gym it doesn’t have to be for hours. Even thirty minutes is better than nothing! Baby steps add up. If you do 30 mins twice a week then maybe three times the next week, you are doing exponentially better than no exercise at all.

Here’s to a better U!

Getting Started: Roseann Gardinier

Today is Day 1 of the BetterU Challenge! As our participants get started, they're already excited for what lies ahead. Right now, meet one of our challengers, Roseann Gardinier:

Greetings everyone, and welcome to my blog.  My name is Roseann Gardinier.  I am 46 years old.  I am a wife and mother of 5 adult children. Last year I became a grandmother.  My first grandchild was born in October of last year, my 2nd grandchild was born in March of this year, and I have a third grandchild on the way in November!  I am a RN, and work as a school nurse for the Canastota Central School District.

First, let me begin by thanking the American Heart Association for choosing me as a participant in the BetterU program.  I am so excited to begin this program.  I know that this will change my life for the better.  I have tried so many different diets and exercise programs, but never succeeded in accomplishing the goals I started out with.  I really believe it was because I was alone in my quest.  But, with the help of the American Heart Association's BetterU program, and the support from St. Joseph's Hospital, and Gold's Gym, I believe that this time, I will not only achieve my goals, but exceed them!

Just a little history about why I applied.  Both of my parents suffer from heart disease.  My mother not only has heart disease, but also has risk factors such as Diabetes that have, and continue to, contribute to this terrible disease.  My father suffered from a "silent" MI (myocardial infarction or heart attack), it was found out during a heart catheterization.  He had had a major heart attack, injuring a coronary artery, and never knew.  It was a miracle that he did not die immediately.  He has also suffered a mild stroke that has left a small deficiency in his gait.  Two years ago, I found out that my cholesterol was high.  My doctor and I discussed weight loss, as I am also overweight, as well as medication options for the high cholesterol.  I declined medications, because I thought that I could make the necessary changes on my own.  My cholesterol was lower one year later, but not enough. Again, I declined medication and continued trying to do it on my own.  I was inconsistent, and could not maintain a healthy diet, and did not exercise enough.  I would do well for about a month or two, but "something" would cause me to stop my progress.  They were excuses, and I recognize that now.  Then this May, at our school nurses dinner, we invited two ladies to come and speak about heart disease.  Leisha Tedford, a 45 yr old woman who suffers from heart disease came and told us her "story".  Listening to her story, the statistics that she presented, and the risk factors for women, was eye-opening.  Our lives were not that different, and yet here she was, recently recovered from her second open heart surgery, and I realized that if I didn't make a change soon, that it could very well be me who could be the next victim of heart disease.  Then Jessica Ambrose, from the American Heart Association, described the BetterU program, and urged us to apply online.  I realized that it was time to stop making excuses and make a permanent, life-altering change, NOW.  This was the perfect opportunity.  I am so grateful to have been accepted, and look forward to working with the trainers at Gold Gym, the staff at St. Joseph's Hospital, as well as the American Heart Association.  I also look forward to my new friends and partners, the other 10 participants, and journeying with them, as we change our lives, and lower our risk of heart disease.

Today, our journey begins.

Starting the BetterU Challenge

Today 11 women are joining the American Heart Association and St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center on a journey to better heart health. These 11 women will take part in the Go Red BetterU Challenge. BetterU is a free 12-week online nutrition and fitness program that gives women a heart healthy makeover from the inside out.

She has a family history of heart disease risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes. Now she wants to get those problems under control so she can live longer for her family, make better food choices for them, and help her overweight children.

Barbara Muller:
While caring for her husband during his illness, Barbara Muller knew she was neglecting her own health. Now it’s time for this 78-year-old from Liverpool to get back on track and put her health first. Barbara says she wants to get on a regular regimen, and increase both her strength and endurance.

Sonal Patel:
Sonal Patel says she has always struggled with her weight, but she wants to make a change. 33-year-old Sonal, of Syracuse, wants to make sure her weight isn’t affecting the rest of her goals by getting healthier, increasing her energy and her overall toning.

Tecora Pertilla:
With congenital heart failure at the age of 23 and a history of hypertension and obesity, 35-year-old Tecora Pertilla, of Fayetteville, says she is ready to get healthy but needs support in her journey.  This mother wants to be a role model for her two daughters, live longer for them, and find herself.

Elizabeth Savicki:
Elizabeth Savicki knows she is overweight and suffers from high blood pressure. She says she needs to take steps NOW to gain a better quality of life and live to see her daughter achieve her dreams. This 37-year-old from Cicero wants to lower her blood pressure, increase her energy, and gain self-confidence.

Suzanne Viola:
Suzanne Viola knows what heart disease can do to a family. Her mother suffered a heart attack. Suzanne says she doesn’t want to put her children through that pain, and is taking steps to make a change.  Suzanne is 44-years-old and is from Syracuse. She wants to lose weight, learn to eat better, and create better exercise habits.

Glorious Wallace:
Two years ago, 60-year-old Glorious Wallace was diagnosed with heart disease. Now this East Syracuse woman says she is ready to commit to the work and dedication required to get a healthier functioning heart, along with a new perspective on lifestyle and the ability to encourage others with her own success.

Throughout the program, these women will be updating on us what they’re doing and how it’s impacting their lives. Be sure to check back here over the next 12-weeks to follow along with our BetterU Challengers!
